Fig trees

A hardy Fig tree can be grown against a wall or in a container. Fig trees are very precocious and will start to fruit within a year or two. Fig trees produce their tiny fruits directly on the stems, between the large leaves. Fig trees need no pollinators and actually prefer a poor soil to fruit well. A sunny aspect for your Fig tree will promote the best fruit. In such an aspect you can harvest a Brown Turkey fig for most of the summer. The leaves of a Fig Tree are very large and lobed – almost tropical looking! Although it isn’t necessary, you can also grow Fig trees in a greenhouse or conservatory. The White Fig tree ‘White Marseilles’ is a popular variation with extra sweet fruits. But it is the Brown Turkey Fig tree that remains the most popular. Brown Turkey is the most reliable variety. Fig trees don’t have to be grown as ‘trees’ and can be kept quite small, or grown in a 20” container. Don’t feed your Fig tree too much for the most fruit. Further cultivation hints on growing Fig trees and Fig plants can be found in our cultivation guide.
